My name is Chef Duane Sovyn and I teach at WH Croxford High School in Airdrie.
I am a Red Seal Chef and obtained my Journeyman papers in 2004. I have training prospective student chefs since 2009.
I graduated with honours from SAIT and participated in a memorable Culinary Exchange to Austria where I worked in the Pan Hans Hotel. I am passionate about cooking and want nothing more than to live vicariously through my students as they travel and cook their way around the globe, enjoying cultures, and most importantly, food. My hope is that they bring back what they learn and enhance our ever changing culture in Canada.
Our Culinary Arts program at our school, prepares students for their careers as they enter SAIT. The program spans three years, starting in grade ten, and culminating in grade twelve. Each year we send Culinary students to compete in Skills Canada. The last year we attended Provincials for Culinary Arts; one of our competitors received a gold medal.
Our school is now three years old. When we first opened, there were only grade nine and ten students starting their Culinary journey. This year we welcomed our grade twelves as the program reached fruition.
My students are focused, reliable and a pleasure to teach. They strive to be the best each and every day taking pride in what they create. It is a pleasure to watch my them grow. You can see by the smiles from the people who are lucky enough to eat their food, that my students truly are doing what they love.
